The Brazilian retail scene has experienced significant transformations with the end of five big traditional names: Mesbla, Mappin, Arapuã, Ultralar and Eletroradiobraz.

These companies, once market leaders, faced challenges such as competition from specialized retailers, changes in consumer behavior and financial difficulties that culminated in their bankruptcies or sales to giants such as Carrefour and Pão de Açúcar.

Mesbla and Mappin, for example, marked the history of retail in Brazil with their large stores and innovations. However, they were unable to adapt to the new market dynamics in the 1990s, leading to the bankruptcy of Mesbla in 1999 and Mappin in the same year.

Arapuã, known for its appliance stores, suffered from high default rates, resulting in debts that exceeded 1 billion reais. His long legal battle ended with the declaration of bankruptcy in 2020.

Ultralar, initially focused on selling gas stoves, expanded its operations becoming one of the main retailers in the country, until it was sold to Carrefour and Jumbo Eletro.

Eletroradiobraz, which started out repairing radios, also ventured into supermarket retail, but faced administrative and financial problems and was acquired by Grupo Pão de Açúcar.
