New minimum wage: understanding the impacts in 2024

Paraná, which has a unique scenario with regard to the minimum salary, in 2024, stands out for having the highest regional minimum wage in the country, reaching up to fifty-one percent higher than the national minimum wage.

The values vary between R$1,856.94 and R$2,134.88, divided into four ranges, according to the worker’s economic segment.

Salary Ranges and Sectors Covered

The regional floor in Paraná is divided into four bands, each with a specific value:

R$ 1,856.94: Agricultural, forestry and fishing employees. R$ 1,816.60: Administrative services, general services, repair, maintenance, salespeople in stores and markets, and domestic workers. R$ 1,877.19: Employees in the production of industrial goods and services. R$ 2,017.02: Mid-level technicians.

Why doesn’t the increase apply to all of Brazil?

It is essential to highlight the difference between the regional floor and the national minimum wage. The national minimum wage, defined by the federal government in January this year, is R$1,412.00.

The regional minimum wage in Paraná, established by state law, is a complementary value that aims to guarantee better living conditions for workers in the state.

Impacts on the economy and reflections

The increase in Paraná’s regional floor generates impacts on the local economy, both positive and negative.

On the one hand, increased purchasing power boosts consumption and income generation.

This increase in the minimum wage benefits around 3.5 million formal workers in Paraná, increasing their purchasing power and boosting consumption in sectors such as food, clothing, basic services and leisure.

It also contributes to reducing social inequality, reducing poverty and promoting a fairer income distribution.

It should be noted that greater purchasing power drives demand for products and services, especially in micro and small companies, boosting the local economy and generating new jobs.

On the other hand, costs for companies increase, which can lead to a reduction in job vacancies or the need to increase prices.

Furthermore, the increase in purchasing power, if not accompanied by an increase in production, can lead to inflation, putting pressure on the prices of products and services and impacting the purchasing power of the population in general.

Finally, micro and small companies, with a lower profit margin and ability to adapt, may face difficulties in meeting the increase in the minimum salary, which could lead to a reduction in job vacancies or even the closure of businesses.
