Rio 2024 Carnival: what opens and what closes?

Health Units

Primary Care health units, such as municipal health centers, family clinics and polyclinics, including the Super Centro Carioca de Saúde, will operate on Saturday, from 8 am to 12 pm.

On Monday, which is optional, some units may or may not work. On Tuesday, the Carnival holiday, none will be open.

On Ash Wednesday, on the 14th, they will be open from 1pm. The 24-hour units of the municipal health network, such as UPAs, hospitals, CERs and CAPS type III, will operate normally throughout the carnival, between the 10th and 14th of February.

Bank agencies

Bank branches will not open on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Service will resume on Ash Wednesday, starting at 12pm and with normal closing times.

It is recommended that customers use digital means to pay bills, and bills due on holiday days can be paid interest-free on Wednesday (14).

Judicial power

The Rio Court of Justice will operate on a shift basis from 6pm on Friday (10). During the 11th to 14th, activities and procedural deadlines will be suspended.

The Court of Justice will only deal with urgent cases during the shift, which include authorization for travel for children and adolescents, burial permits, search and seizure of minors, admission to hospitals, arrest warrants and cases of domestic and family violence, among others.

The Judiciary Duty in the Center will operate in the Palace of Justice building, on Rua Dom Manuel s/nº, Praça XV, Centro.

What are the state roads like at Carnival Rio 2024?

The Department of Highways will use mobile radars to catch speeding and ensure the safety of drivers from Friday (10).

The radars installed along state highways will operate from 6 am to 8 pm, in accordance with State Law No. 8362.

The inspection will cover speed and traffic violations, such as illegal overtaking and driving on the shoulder. The fine for anyone driving on the shoulder will be R$1,467.35.

It is important that partygoers inspect their vehicles before traveling, avoid drinking alcohol and using cell phones while driving, and always wear a seat belt.


Initially, MetrôRio will offer a special operating schedule during the five days of Carnival, with 24-hour service, without interruption, from 5am on Friday (10) until midnight on Tuesday (14).

From Saturday (11), Line 2 will operate between Pavuna and General Osório/Ipanema, without the need to transfer at Estácio station.

Lines 1 and 4 will follow the Uruguay-Jardim Oceânico/Barra da Tijuca route. On the Saturday of the Parade of Champions (18), the subway will operate again in the early hours of the morning until 11pm on Sunday (19).


From Friday (10) until Tuesday (14), Supervia will reinforce the operation of trains with extra trips throughout the day and in the early hours of the morning to the Japeri and Santa Cruz branches, also serving the Deodoro branch stations, in addition to the Saracuruna branch.

Central do Brasil station will be open from Friday until the last train on Tuesday. During early morning operations, the other stations will only operate for disembarking passengers.

Namely, CCR Barcas will operate with a special schedule on Monday (13) and Ash Wednesday (14). The Arariboia line will follow the Saturday schedule, with trips every 30 minutes, from 5:30 am to 11:30 pm, in the Niterói-Rio direction and from 6 am to 11:30 pm, in the Rio-Niterói direction.

On Tuesdays (21), the concessionaire will operate with the Sunday and holiday schedule on the Arariboia lines, with trips every 60 minutes, and Paquetá, according to information on the website.

VLT Carioca

Lines 1, 2 and 3 of the VLT Carioca will operate at normal times, from 6 am to midnight, during all days of Carnival.

From Saturday (11) to Wednesday (14), the operation will be carried out at 20-minute intervals, and from 2pm on Ash Wednesday, the intervals will be 10 to 20 minutes.

The ticket costs R$4.30, and the boarding pass can be purchased or loaded at stops and stations, which also offer terminals for checking balances, unlocking cards and releasing online recharge, through the Riocard Mais app or website Easy Recharge.

Will commerce work at Rio 2024 Carnival?

Guanabara Supermarkets will have all 26 units operating normally during the carnival period, from 7:30 am to 10 pm, and on Sundays, from 7:30 am to 2 pm.

Rio’s shopping malls will have different opening hours during the Carnival holiday, varying according to each establishment.
