Can all seniors get a free 0km car? Understand

Brazilian seniors are eagerly awaiting the approval of a law that promises to significantly reduce the cost of purchasing new cars for this group.

The proposal, known as Bill 2937/2020, designed by former deputy Alexandre Frota, aims to exempt the Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI) for seniors when purchasing new vehicles every five years.

This measure aims to facilitate access for elderly people to updated and more affordable vehicles, thus promoting greater mobility and independence.

However, the project was not approved in the Federal Senate. Currently, in Brazil, only people with some type of disability (PwD) are entitled to significant discounts when purchasing new vehicles.

For PwD, it is possible to obtain a discount of up to R$120 thousand, deducted from the ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services) price.

Furthermore, the text addresses other exemptions and gratuities available to the elderly, such as discounts on debts and exemption from IPTU and IPVA, highlighting the importance of policies that support the autonomy and financial well-being of this segment of the population.

The failure to advance PL 2937/2020 highlights the continued need for advocacy and public policies that recognize and meet the specific needs of elderly people in Brazil.

While the exemption for the purchase of new vehicles remains out of reach, other financial support measures and tax exemptions for the elderly continue to be a relevant topic of discussion and action within Brazilian society.

If you need to buy a new car, be sure to check out our tips.

Create a budget

Write down your income and expenses to understand where your money is going. Identify areas where you can cut unnecessary expenses and redirect that money towards purchasing a new car.

Save regularly

Make saving a habit. Determine a fixed amount or percentage of your monthly income to be allocated to purchasing the car. Putting this amount into a savings account as soon as you receive it helps you avoid impulsive spending.

Avoid unnecessary debt

Debt can delay your savings plan. Avoid making large or unnecessary purchases on credit that could compromise your ability to save.

Research financing options

Once you’re closer to your goal, explore different financing options. Some institutions offer special conditions for financing new vehicles.

Finally, it is important to highlight that, although it is not possible to obtain discounts on new cars, there are a series of benefits aimed at the elderly.

Registration in the Single Registry for Social Programs of the Federal Government (CadÚnico) is the first step to accessing them.
