The need for vaccination against Dengue

Dengue is a disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, and its incidence has been a public health challenge in Brazil and many other tropical countries.

In 2023, Brazil recorded 1.6 million cases of the disease and 1,094 deaths due to complications related to dengue.

The beginning of 2024 already presents alarming numbers, with 120,874 cases and 12 deaths to date.

Cities selected to receive the Dengue vaccine

To face this worrying reality, the Ministry of Health carefully selected the cities that will receive the dengue vaccine.

The choice fell on municipalities with more than 100 thousand inhabitants that have high transmission of the disease, mainly due to serotype two of the dengue virus.

The distribution of the vaccine will occur comprehensively, covering all regions of Brazil. Among the cities covered, there are large urban centers such as:

Brasília;Rio de Janeiro;Belo Horizonte;Manaus;Foz do Iguaçu;Salvador; among others.

In total, 521 municipalities in 16 Brazilian states were selected to participate in this immunization campaign. See the complete list at:

When does the Dengue vaccine start?

In principle, the dengue vaccination campaign is scheduled to begin in February.

It will be aimed mainly at children and adolescents aged between 10 and 14 years, a group that concentrates a significant number of hospitalizations due to dengue after the elderly.

Initially, vaccination will be restricted to this age group, as the Dengue vaccine was approved by Anvisa only for individuals aged 4 to 60 years.

Stock and future prospects

Brazil has already received the first batch of the vaccine, containing 750,000 doses, and is awaiting a second shipment of 570,000 doses next month.

These initial doses will allow the immunization of 3.2 million people in 2024 alone. Furthermore, the Ministry of Health has already secured a stock of 9 million doses for the following year, 2025.

However, it is important to highlight that the collective impact of vaccination against dengue will be felt by the population in around two years, according to health authorities.

The Ministry of Health also has plans to include in the Unified Health System (SUS) a national vaccine against the disease, developed by the Butantan Institute, which is expected to be approved by Anvisa in 2025 and inserted into the SUS in 2026.

Next steps and expectations

Some steps still need to be completed before the vaccines reach health centers. The first shipment must go through the Customs and Anvisa clearance process.

It will then go to the National Institute for Health Quality Control (INCQS). Although this process may take one to two weeks, distribution will depend on the efficiency of these bureaucratic phases.

The fight against dengue is a priority in Brazilian public health, and large-scale vaccination is a fundamental strategy to control the spread of the disease.

Although the results will take a while to become evident, in the long term, this immunization campaign will contribute significantly to protecting the population against dengue.

Therefore, continue following updates from the Ministry of Health to stay up to date with the progress of the campaign in your region and ensure the safety of your family.
