New ID: everything about the National Identity Card and its changes

In principle, the changes to the document reflect a significant effort by the Brazilian government to modernize the civil identification system, increasing security and making life easier for citizens.

Therefore, with the implementation of the new ID, greater efficiency in information management and a considerable reduction in cases of fraud and duplication are expected. See the changes it brings:

Unification with the CPF: the main aspect of the document is the adoption of the CPF (Individual Person Registration) number as the main identification. This means that the traditional ID number, which varies from state to state, will be replaced by the CPF number. This change aims to create a unified identification system throughout the national territory; Integrating document: with the new ID, the CPF becomes the basis for the integration of various official documents. This includes the National Driving License (CNH), the voter registration card, and the work card, among others. This means that a single number (the CPF number) will be sufficient to access a range of government information and services; Physical and digital format: the new ID will be available in both physical and digital format. The digital version can be accessed and used through the gov.br application, offering greater convenience and security; Combating fraud: the unification of records through the CPF has the main objective of increasing security and reducing the chances of identification fraud. It will be more difficult for malicious individuals to forge identities or use other people’s documents; Transition process: it is not necessary to immediately replace the old ID with the new one. Current IDs will remain valid until February 28, 2032, offering a transition period so everyone can update without rushing.

How do I request a new ID?

To issue the first copy of the new ID, simply go to the state or Federal District identification institutes, presenting your birth or marriage certificate. The good news is that the document will be available in both physical and digital formats.

Validity and transition to the document

The validity of the new ID varies depending on the citizen’s age. For children up to 12 years old, the document will be valid for five years; for people between 12 and 60 years old, the validity will be ten years; and for those over 60, the document will be valid for life. Important: it is not necessary to immediately exchange your current ID for the new one, as the old ID will remain valid until February 28, 2032.

Costs and availability

Both the issuance and renewal of the new ID will be free, following the same principle as the National Driving License (CNH). This measure facilitates access for all citizens to an updated and secure identification document.
