What makes fuel prices change?

Firstly, fuel prices change due to a combination of global and local factors.

This includes the cost of crude oil on the international market, exchange rates, government taxes, refining and distribution costs, and oil company pricing policies.

Furthermore, variations in global oil supply and demand, geopolitical conflicts and decisions by large oil producers also influence prices.

Furthermore, internal factors such as fuel transport and distribution infrastructure, and the mandatory blending of biofuels can affect regional prices at gas stations.

Agency responsible for the data

The ANP (National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels) is a Brazilian federal regulatory body responsible for supervising the activities of the oil, natural gas and biofuels industry in the country.

In short, it regulates the exploration, production, refining, commercialization and transportation of these resources.

The ANP also establishes quality standards for fuels and monitors prices charged in the market, ensuring compliance with legislation and the protection of consumer rights.

Drop in the price of gasoline and other fuels

This week, drivers across Brazil had a reason to celebrate: a slight drop in the prices of gasoline, ethanol and diesel at gas stations.

According to an ANP survey, this reduction represents a relief, especially considering the frequent fluctuations in fuel prices.

While the variations are a national average and may differ from region to region, the overall impact has benefited consumers.

Gasoline fell

Firstly, the average price of gasoline showed a small reduction, going from R$5.58 to R$5.56 per liter.

This adjustment, although subtle, breaks a sequence of stability and slight highs, bringing a breather to drivers.

The drop in prices is a continuation of the trend seen in the final months of 2023, where values began to decline more frequently.

Ethanol is more accessible

Then, ethanol also followed the downward trend, marking the second consecutive decline. The average price of biofuel reduced from R$3.42 to R$3.40 per liter.

This variation, although small, is significant for consumers who choose ethanol, especially considering that the price of ethanol tends to follow fluctuations in gasoline.

Diesel also had a setback

Finally, drivers who fill up with diesel also benefited from the reduction in prices, which fell from R$5.94 to R$5.91 per liter.

This is the second drop in the last four weeks, bringing a positive outlook for the beginning of 2024.

Despite the return of tax collection on diesel in January, the readjustments promoted by Petrobras at the end of 2023 helped to cushion possible impacts on consumers’ pockets.

Important changes in fuel prices

Overall, these changes in fuel prices are a relief for Brazilian drivers, who constantly face challenges with the costs of maintaining and operating their vehicles.

The drop in prices, even if modest, is an indication that the market can offer moments of financial relief, making the task of refueling a little less burdensome for the pocket.
