What is the FGTS for?

In principle, the Service Time Guarantee Fund (FGTS) is an essential financial security tool for Brazilian workers.

Created with the aim of protecting employees dismissed without just cause, it consists of accounts opened by the employer in the name of its employees.

Each month, employers deposit an amount corresponding to 8% of the employee’s salary.

These funds can be used in various situations, such as purchasing a home, retirement, in cases of serious illness or unfair dismissal, offering an economic safety net at critical moments in the worker’s life.

Birthday withdrawal is available

The birthday withdrawal is a modality that allows workers to annually withdraw part of the balance of their accounts linked to the FGTS, in the month of their birthday.

It’s an incredible opportunity to have that extra money when you need it most.

Three ways to access FGTS

The withdrawal process is simple and can be done in three ways: at Caixa Econômica Federal branches, at lottery outlets or via the Caixa Tem app.

Simply download the FGTS app (Android: or iOS: on your cell phone, create an account and follow the instructions to make the withdrawal.

You can withdraw up to 50% of the linked account balance, plus an additional installment of 10%, 20% or 30%, depending on how long you have worked with a formal contract.

New proposals for the birthday withdrawal

There is a proposal under analysis that could bring even more benefits to those who opted for the birthday withdrawal.

This proposal aims to allow the full withdrawal of FGTS accounts, in addition to the termination fine, in the event of termination of the employment contract.

This would provide more freedom and options for workers to manage their guarantee fund resources.

Other FGTS modalities for specific cases

Furthermore, the FGTS offers different modalities to meet the varied needs of Brazilian workers. In addition to the well-known birthday withdrawal, there are four other important modalities:

Withdrawal due to retirement: workers who retire have the right to withdraw the total accumulated in their FGTS accounts. This modality is a way of guaranteeing additional financial support at the time of retirement; Withdrawal to purchase your own home: one of the great advantages of the FGTS is the possibility of using it to buy or pay off a residential property. This modality helps many families realize their dream of owning their own home;Withdrawal in case of serious illnesses: in more delicate health situations, such as cancer or HIV, the worker or their dependents can withdraw the FGTS. This resource is essential to support treatments and medical expenses;Withdrawal-termination: in case of unfair dismissal, the worker is entitled to full withdrawal of the FGTS balance, in addition to a termination fine. This modality is an important financial security during the transition period between jobs.
