Does night mode on your cell phone help you sleep?

Initially, the study carried out by the University of Basel in Switzerland and the Technical University of Munich in Germany questioned the effectiveness of night mode in relieving insomnia symptoms.

Although night mode changes the hue of the screen’s light to a warmer, less bluish color, researchers have found that the color itself doesn’t influence the human biological clock as much.

Blue light, however, affects the retinal ganglion cells, responsible for light perception and pupil adjustment.

Therefore, reducing light intensity and shortening its wavelength may be more effective in minimizing vision damage and discomfort, although this does not necessarily improve sleep.

Understand this study better

In short, research suggests that blue light, present in natural sunlight and many artificial light sources, such as lamps and device screens, can inhibit the production of melatonin, a sleep-regulating hormone.

This can lead to lower quality sleep, even after sleeping for several hours, especially if we spend the night watching series or using our cell phone.

Thus, the study points out that, although night mode can reduce visual discomfort, its impact on sleep may not be as significant as previously thought.

Tips for truly sleeping well

Although not everyone can sleep well at night, there are some techniques that can help a lot. Check out!

Relaxation routine before bed

First, establish a relaxing nighttime routine. This may include reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation or gentle yoga exercises.

Avoid stimulating activities, such as intense exercise, close to bedtime.

Suitable environment for sleep

Then create an environment conducive to sleep. This means a dark, quiet room with a comfortable temperature.

Consider using blackout curtains, sleep masks, or ear plugs if necessary. Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows.

Electronic stimulus control

Finally, reduce exposure to cell phone, tablet and computer screens at least one hour before bed. Choose activities that relax your mind and prepare your body for sleep.

Furthermore, sleeping with your cell phone in bed while it is charging can be dangerous for several reasons.

First, there is the risk of overheating. When your phone is charging, it naturally generates heat, and if it’s under pillows or blankets, that heat can build up, potentially causing damage to the device or even starting a fire.

In addition, there is also a risk of electric shock if the charging cable is damaged or there is a short circuit.

Therefore, for safety and health reasons, it is recommended to charge your cell phone away from the bed and on a non-flammable surface, unplugging it before going to sleep.
