The Beatles: Rock Band

“All You Need is Love” Sells More Than 100,000

Lovelovelove.Well, this is considerably less than 20 million, but still a very healthy number, nevertheless. “All You Need is Love,” the Beatles Rock Band download released concurrently with the game, has sold over 100,000 downloads, says MTV Games.

Given that the song is currently still exclusive to the 360, and the game sold around 250k on 360 in September, this is not an insignificant number. Since “all Apple Corps Ltd, MTV Games, Harmonix and Microsoft proceeds” benefit Doctors Without Borders, that looks like a cool $200k for the charity, with the song not yet available on two consoles.

Abbey Road Roundup

You can almost smell the tea.Hey, you knew that the rest of Abbey Road was released on Tuesday for download in The Beatles: Rock Band, right? And you may have even seen the piece on Wired.com’s Game|Life blog about “five things you didn’t know” about the Abbey Road DLC.

But have you seen the official trailer for the DLC launch? How about Harmonix’s tour of the real Abbey Road studios in London? No? Well, you’re in luck, as I’ve posted them after the break.

Beatles Rock Band Sells Well, but Not Well Enough?

Race for the prize.Industry sales tracker The NPD Group has released their numbers for September game sales, and MTV Games would like you to know that The Beatles: Rock Band outsold Guitar Hero 5 by a fair margin. “We outsold them two-to-one on a revenue basis,” MTV Games general manager Scott Guthrie told Gamasutra, “and we outperformed on a unit basis as well [about 20 percent, says Industry Gamers], despite the fact that they had an eight-day advantage, and were giving away free software.”

A press release from the Rock Band folks says the game “debuted as the top selling music video game in the U.S. for September” and “was also the #2 selling title across all genres by revenue in the U.S for the month of September.” But note a couple key phrases. First: “top selling music video game in the U.S.”  — NPD only tracks U.S. sales, so worldwide sales could paint a different picture.  And it was the top-selling music game. In terms of sales numbers it was beaten by Halo 3: ODST and Madden 10. It’s also important to note that these numbers are combined across all available platforms.

The second key phrase to pay attention to  is “by revenue.” The fact that the game did notably better by revenue than by sales means that people were buying more expensive versions — in other words, bundles. From this we can safely conclude the game brought in a fair number of newcomers to the genre, folks who didn’t already have a suite of plastic instruments lying around. That’s good news for the health of music games across the board.

But not everyone sees these sales as a good thing. USA Today says:

Analysts expected the game to sell at least 1 million copies. Instead of a bona fide hit, “The Beatles performed at a respectable level [of 595,000 copies],” says analyst Jesse Divnich of Electronic Entertainment Design and Research. But with downloadable albums on the way, … “I have no doubts we will see a resurgence in sales during the holiday months.”

So if Beatles Rock Band beat out GH5 with only “respectable” sales, what does that say about Guitar Hero 5′s performance? I fully expect Activision to counter with some worldwide sales numbers in the near future.

New Beatles Rock Band DLC: Abbey Road

Note: don't try this yourself. Abbey Road is a busy road.Today’s a big day for DLC in the Rock Band world; not only do we get those 10 great Queen tracks, but owners of The Beatles: Rock Band get access to the Beatle’s legendary Abbey Road album in its entirety.

Now, the pricing and structure is a little odd here, so we’ll take this slow. First of all, let’s look at PS3 and 360. Only three songs are available as singles: “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer,” “Oh! Darling,” and “Because.” Those go at the standard rate of $1.99 or 160 Microsoft Points apiece.

If you want the rest of the tracks, you’ll need to pick up the entire “Complete The Album Pack” to, you know, complete the album. Continue reading →

Harmonix’s PAXsploits Captured on Video

But how does he sing?Harmonix has posted a wholly entertaining video of their adventures at the Penny Arcade Expo last month. It features all the familiar Harmonix community managers, a quick interview with Jonathan Coulton and Paul and Storm, and lots of footage of show attendees and HMXers rocking out to Rock Band of both the standard and Beatles variety.

I’ve embedded the video after the break, or you can hit the Read link to see it in its native habitat.

Analyst: Beatles Rock Band Outsold Guitar Hero 5 2:1

But they don't come cheap.GameSpot spoke to a pair of videogame industry analysts about the performance of The Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5, and got some numbers that appear to contradict Activision’s confident claims of dominance:

From the article:

[Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael] Pachter expects The Beatles: Rock Band to have racked up 1.3 million sales across all versions, with Guitar Hero 5 moving 700,000 copies. … [Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse] Divnich agrees that The Beatles sold more games than Guitar Hero 5, but expects a much narrower gap between the two. He projected The Beatles: Rock Band to hit 1 million copies sold for the month, with Guitar Hero 5 tallying 800,000.

That’s quite a difference from Activision’s claims of outselling The Beatles four to one. But of course, we’re talking about different time frames — and the official numbers still aren’t in. The good news for both properties is that they outsold expectations, and their success sounds like it’ll narrow that dip in music-game revenue considerably.

Want to See More Beatles DLC? Vote With Your Wallet

Money can't buy me love, but it can buy me more Beatles tunes.I find this surprising: Harmonix’s manager of communications and special projects, John Drake, told The BBPS that more downloadable content for The Beatles: Rock Band is not a guarantee. While Abbey Road is still slated for October 20, with Sgt. Pepper’s due in November and Rubber Soul in December, anything beyond that is still very much in the air.

From the article:

“Every time we do one song … its like, send people to Abbey Road, use the original tape, separate them out … it costs thousands of dollars. We’re waiting to see how things sell. We’re waiting to see how the albums do. If they sell well, we’ll have a lot more content.”

So if you’re jonesing to get some more Beatles tunes beyond those already promised, make sure everyone you know is picking up the DLC that’s already announced.
