Found: Ben Stiller + Bill Clinton = Totally Shredding

Clinton and StillerTo help raise awareness for Ben Stiller’s “Stillerstrong” charity drive (which aims to build a much-needed school in Haiti), Stiller shot this video of a phone call with former president Bill Clinton. In it, it is revealed that the two make a habit of playing Rock Band together. Apparently Clinton “totally shreds” the solo in “My Sharona” on Expert, while Stiller hogs the mic.

It’s a cute video promoting a good cause, and it’s embedded after the break.

Overheard: Rob Halford of Judas Priest

Rob HalfordSpeaking to Backstage Axxess about music games:

It’s just another form of entertainment, isn’t it? You’re not only getting music with the games … You’re also an active participant for the next great guitar player or drummer in the future. It’s a great learning tool, especially for kids. It teaches kids discipline. It teaches them to be good at something. In order for them to do this you have to practice, practice, practice. Some of these games have a productive use. So anything like that is particularly important.  Especially getting your music across to a generation who normally wouldn’t have heard of you before…until that moment.

Overheard: Jeremy Goldberg of Age of Evil

Such an adorable scowl. The singer for the all-teen, old-school metal revival act Age of Evil, recently interviewed at Guitar International:

I do think that games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band are helping bring back rock and metal and are making it popular again.

But, having said that I just hope it doesn’t get to the point where people are writing songs in the key of blue, or green, or whatever color their controllers are. Hopefully they’ll go out and actually learn how to play the guitar and form their own rock bands.

Found: A Very Long Guitar Hero Commercial

I missed this the first time around. This TV ad in the U.K. is apparently promoting a Doritos promotion to win a copy of Guitar Hero. And it’s over four minutes long. But it’s an entertaining four minutes, if only for the wonderfully deadpan looks on the faces of pretty much everyone around poor Alan.

Found: Christmas Light Hero

I would pay money to play this myself. This may be the greatest thing ever invented: a display of Christmas lights that also happens to be a playable version of Guitar Hero. And better yet: The rest of the lights on the house are synced up to the music.

According to the Huffington Post, the display was put together by Ric Turner, a special effects specialist who used to work for Disney. And while he may have taken some liberties with the charting, you can’t argue with the results.

Overheard: Terror on the High Seas

Didn't I see this scene in 2112?Charlie McDonald, director of guest activities for Royal Caribbean International, speaking to CBS News about the gaming available on the Oasis of the Seas cruise ship:

“We can set up Rock Band in all of our different facilities, but also down in the On Air club. We had it going the other night, and it’s amazing. It’s not just for kids and teens. You’ll have a bunch of dads or senior citizens down there jamming out on the guitar and drums.”
