Guitar Hero DLC Today: Rush, Slash, Alice Cooper, Poison, Tesla

Guitar Hero: RushI bet I freaked the hell out of someone at Activision yesterday. When I made my post about November DLC, I chose to illustrate it with a picture of Slash rocking out during his solo from “November Rain.” Because it’s November, you see.

Turns out this month’s first offering features three tracks from Slash’s solo album, and I swear I had no idea. Now what would have been weird is if I’d also mentioned Poison, since it applies to both the band and the tune from Alice Cooper, or Rush. Not really sure how I would have worked Tesla in there, though.

Anyway, tracks! Live! Today! On all systems!

Alice Cooper Elected Elected - Billion Dollar Babies
Alice Cooper Poison Poison - Trash
Poison Talk Dirty To Me Talk Dirty to Me - Look What the Cat Dragged In (20th Anniversary Edition) [Remastered]
Rush Limelight Limelight - Moving Pictures (Remastered)
Rush Red Barchetta Red Barchetta - Moving Pictures (Remastered)
Rush Tom Sawyer Tom Sawyer - Moving Pictures (Remastered)
Slash (Feat. Dave Grohl and Duff McKagan) Watch This Watch This (feat. Dave Grohl & Duff McKagan) - Slash
Slash (Feat. Iggy Pop) We’re All Gonna Die We're All Gonna Die (feat. Iggy Pop) - Slash
Slash (Feat. M Shadows) Nothing To Say Nothing to Say (feat. M Shadows) - Slash
Tesla Love Song Love Song - The Great Radio Controversy

These 10 tunes can be had for the usual $2 apiece, or you can get the whole pack for $19.99, 1600 Microsoft Points, or 2000 Wii Points. If your math is reasonably solid, you may notice that this means you don’t get a discount if you get the whole track. (In fact, you actually pay a little more on PS3!) I have no idea why that is. Let’s all ponder it while listening to the playlist after the break. Continue reading →

Yes, Guitar Hero is Getting DLC in November (And a New Game Next Year)

November RainTwo bits of Hero news for you:

First, though we haven’t gotten any inkling of what’s to come, Activision has confirmed that we will be getting new Guitar Hero DLC this month. Several messages on the Guitar Hero Twitter account have said as much — though one says “sometime this month,” which isn’t terribly encouraging. But hey, at least there’s something to look forward to.

And two: Looking farther forward, in a recent earnings call Activision announced that there will be a new Hero game next year. And what you just read is exactly as much info as is currently available.

Guitar Hero DLC Today: Rocky Horror

Guitar Hero: Rocky HorrorAmidst all the Rock Band 3 hoopla, let’s not forget that Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock gets three sweet transv — er, I mean, three sweet tracks for download today, courtesy of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Who’s grabbing these? Or is everyone neck-deep in Rock Band 3 today?

Analyst to Activision: Get the Band Back Together

Rock HeroYikes. Sounds like Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock’s outlook isn’t looking so rosy after all. In fact MCV says that an analyst is recommending Activision take drastic measures to revive the Guitar Hero brand:

“We believe Activision’s best option at this point would be to approach Viacom with idea of (re)merging the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises through a sale or joint venture agreement,” Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creatz stated.

We’ve discussed similar ideas before, but at this point, I don’t really see that making much of a difference. I feel like Rock Band has built up its own brand to the point where neither one franchise could be folded into the other without doing considerable damage to the brand. But then, I’m not an analyst.

If Activision did take such drastic measures, what would you want them to do? Sell Guitar Hero to MTV? Buy Harmonix and have them develop Guitar Hero? Something else?

Does Rock Band 3 Import Omission Point to Guitar Hero: Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Guitar Hero: Red Hot Chili PeppersHere’s an interesting theory from my pals over at The Hero Feed. They point out that folks who got Rock Band 3 early and tried to import their old library ran into snags importing Soundgarden and Red Hot Chili Peppers tunes. The theory is, Soundgarden probably has some Guitar Hero exclusivity thanks to the packaging of Telephantasm with Warriors of Rock; therefore, the unavailability of RHCP tracks implies there’s a similar exclusivity, lending credence to that old Guitar Hero: Red Hot Chili Peppers rumor.

That may sound farfetched, but as they point out, there’s precedent:

You may remember three tracks appearing as non-exportable from the original Rock Band when Rock Band 2 was released. One of the most prominent tracks was “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. Less than 6  months later, we had Guitar Hero: Metallica.

What do you think?

Neversoft on Rock Band 3′s Pro Guitar

Guitar Hero 1Over the weekend, GamePro posted a meaty feature about the state of the music-game industry. There’s lots of good rumination on music games in there (disclosure: much of it is from me), but what I found most provocative were Neversoft project lead Brian Bright’s comments about Rock Band 3′s Pro mode.

“I think that we will have to see how eagerly gamers snatch up the new pro guitars for Rock Band 3,” Bright explains. “It may be a tall order to expect millions of music game fans to really want to transition to a real guitar. It’s difficult and time consuming to learn how to play a real guitar. There’s a reason that Guitar Hero became so popular, and that’s because everybody felt like they could play guitar without actually having to spend the time to learn how to play guitar.”

You’ll want to hit the Read link to check out the whole article, but in the meantime, tell me what you think. Does he have a point, or is this something of a case of sour grapes?
