Don’t get ready to dismiss that other music game coming out this year just yet. IGN has just posted videos highlighting some of the tracks from the upcoming Power Gig, and as goofy as the game may look…well, see for yourself:
| The Academy Is… | His Girl Friday | ||
| Bad Religion | I Want to Conquer the World | ||
| The Black Keys | Strange Times | ||
| Black Sabbath | The Devil Cried | ||
| The Get Up Kids | Martyr Me | ||
| Mastodon | Crack The Skye | ||
| Mutemath | Chaos | ||
| New Found Glory | Listen to Your Friends | ||
| Paramore | Ignorance | ||
| Queens of the Stone Age | You Think I Ain’t Worth a Dollar, but I Feel Like A Millionaire | ||
| Superdrag | Aspartame | ||
| Surfer Blood | Swim | ||
| Three Days Grace | Break |
I have to say this is a pretty impressive lineup, featuring some deep cuts from some fairly big-time bands. Whatever else you want to say about Power Gig, you can’t say they’re not putting a lot of effort into securing a solid setlist.

Awesome Mute Math choice! We have Typical and Control in RB, but I want to see some more from them. Also, I think it may be a little easier these days to secure artists for music/rhythm games now that people have seen the success of GH and RB.
On the topic of Power Gig, the song choices are great, but I’m not impressed by what I’ve seen so far from the game itself. Don’t even get me started on the “air drums”. I’m sorry, but that’s just a terrible idea, and from what I’ve heard from hands-on previews, it works about as well as you would expect. That is to say, not very. Having zero tactile feedback on drumming just isn’t going to cut it.
When I first heard about it, I thought it was a neat idea and at least something different than what the established titans are doing. But having seen the apparent limitations in the Power Gig demos so far in terms of how much they actually have you doing on the guitar, I’m not that impressed. From what we’ve heard so far, it’s basically limited to power chords. I was reasonably impressed with what we saw back in March when some tech sites first started getting previews of it, but now that we’ve seen the pro guitar stuff in RB3 at E3, that just blows it clear out of the water.
While I appreciate the basic idea behind Power Gig, it looks to be well undermined by poor implementation (the game just doesn’t show promise, and those air drums are a sad joke) and by the simply mind-blowing Pro features in RB3. Before they become another flop like Rock Revolution (another poorly designed music game with an absurd drum setup), I wonder if it wouldn’t make more sense to cut their losses and quietly cancel the game. There’s just no way Konami made money on Revolution, and they had the supposed experience of a seasoned developer/publisher. I don’t see how the Power Gig guys are going to fare much better, even with some good songs in their pocket.
Oh man I would kill to have Paramore – Ignorance in RB.
That one QotSA track almost makes me want to get this.
The setlist seems to be very good. Crack the Skye by Mastodon almost makes me want to buy this. But seeing how the gameplay seems to be I’ll just stick with a rent. RB3 still is my choice of music game for this year.
This setlist is very similar to Guitar Hero 6. Lots of great bands, but extremely deep cuts.
Guess that’s the problem when the biggest kid on the block has almost 2,000 tracks.
Still, props for originality, at least.
Moar Clapton pleeze!
That list of songs doesn’t impress me at all. I haven’t even heard of some of those bands, and I hate New Found Glory and Paramore with a passion.
The only bands I like from it are Sabbath and QOTSA, but those aren’t tracks of theirs I’ve been clamoring to play in a game or anything.
