Open Thread, Special Tuesday Edition: Keyboards!

Rock Band 3: Keyboard IconIn light of this apparent confirmation that Rock Band 3 will feature a keyboard controller, I wanted to open to floor to your thoughts on what keyboard-heavy bands or songs might now be included on the Rock Band 3 disc (or later, in DLC).

My thinking is that we’ll probably get a small dose of dance and/or electronica, but since this is still Rock Band, most of the songs featuring keyboards will probably be from bands with a strong guitar and bass presence as well. (Which means probably no Men Without Hats, more’s the pity.)

I was musing on the Twitters about this before deciding to take it over here, and came up with some obvious ones: Rush, Dream Theater, Yes — and I’ll say it here again, “Roundabout” would be positively killer in Rock Band. Then it occurred to me that we could even further back than the big ’70s arena rock: How great would it be to twiddle along to great ’60s keyboard parts? Think: The Doors, The Animals, hell, pretty much any of the big “The” bands from the ’60s would qualify.

Of course a lot of ’80s hair metal would apply, too. I would certainly not turn down the opportunity to play Bon Jovi’s “Runaway” or “Wild in the Streets” — both songs with big keyboard leads.

I have to say, at first I was kind of put off by the idea of a keyboard controller, but thinking about how many great songs have a strong keyboard component is getting me more and more excited.

How about you? What songs or bands would you like to see take advantage of a keyboard controller?

Well, I like the Keyboard thing, cause it opens alot of new doors, but.
How about it SHUTTING old doors?

Keyboards are awesome, but have you ever thought of some great rock bands that don’t have keyboards? that may not be used in Rock Band 3 ’cause of this?

Even though it’s unlikely, I’d love to have some tunes from pioneering piano rockers like Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. HMX couldn’t use one-track masters from the 50′s originals, but those guys have done plenty of re-records over the years. “Great Balls of Fire?” Yes, please!

The original Dylan release of “Like a Rolling Stone” comes to mind. Lots of big piano and organ riffs.

Although, I’m STILL kind of put off by the idea of a keyboard controller. But I guess I can’t pass judgment until I know more about it.

It does bring the whole electronic scene into line – with keyboards and guitars together we can start looking into the more electro industrial (mmm… Covenant, Cubanate, Front Line Assembly), and then start to make in-roads into psytrance (Infected Mushroom would be fun, as would Skazi. Hell, Skazi even fits the image….)

Prodigy (“Colours” or “Run With the Wolves” from their new album- Dave Grohl drums FTW!), more NIN, “Hold the Line” by Toto, “Estranged” by GNR

  6. Joe Rybicki says:

@Pele, oh hell yeah, that old folky organ sound would be sweet.

@your_moms_box: Screw “Hold the Line,” now I want “Africa”!

@Rutger: Did I miss the announcement that RB3 will feature only songs that include keyboards?

Do you also think RB3 will feature only songs with vocal harmonies?

Because I kinda doubt Harmonix would cut themselves off from a lot of good songs for either reason.

  8. Mike says:

I’m really interested in how it gets implemented. I think it could be a great addition, but I’m worried that it means major changes to the whole feel of the game (a full keyboard would mean scrolling sheet music instead of note highway, I think). It would be sad if the game were hurt by trying to do too much.

  9. Pereira says:

    Roundabout is right.

  10. Rab says:

Depeche Fucking Mode. I hope and pray to reach out and touch faith.

  11. Daniel says:

Bohemian Rapsody has been absent from Queen DLC for this reason

Deep Purple comes to mind. I’d love a re-do of Highway Star with keys

Led Zeppelin’s In Through The Out Door album, but of course that’ll never happen – not yet at least

  12. Pele says:

I just realized — just about anything by Supertramp would be great for keyboards. “School”, “Goodbye Stranger”, “Dreamer”… basically anything from the ‘Crime of the Century’ and ‘Breakfast in America’ albums.

  13. DragoonXD says:

Stratofortress by Stratovarius. People would fail like crazy.

Probably one of my favorite bands might get to stand out because of this, Foxy Shazam. That and you would imagine that it opens songs for already exsisting bands on the platform like Muse, Rush, Queen, Gorillaz, etc. While i’m skeptical of more and more hardware, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited for the options available.
