Open-Thread Wednesday: Classics Revisited

Guitar HeroI was looking back through The Vault the other day, and I realized there’s a bunch of tunes from the early Guitar Hero games that I’d love to be able to play with a full band. Some of them are already available, via DLC (on Guitar Hero or Rock Band) or Smash Hits, but there are a bunch more than aren’t.

So I was wondering, what songs from the guitar-only games would you like to see refreshed with full-band action? (Or with more recent gameplay introductions like open notes?)

Here are a few of my choices, in order of game, though this is by no means an exhaustive list.

Sum 41: “Fat Lip” — I find the band obnoxious, but man was this song fun to play on the first Guitar Hero. The constantly changing rhythms would make this entertaining as hell on the drums.

Guns n’ Roses: “Sweet Child O’ Mine” — Guitar Hero II included the fun bass line, but I’d love to be able to screech along to the vocals, and I suspect the low-key drum track would be fun for those of us who hover between Hard and Expert.

Primus: “John the Fisherman” — Really, I’d love any Primus song with a full band; every part (except vocals) on pretty much every song would be a spectacular challenge. I felt inhuman when I beat this one on Expert bass in Guitar Hero II.

Muse: “Knights of Cydonia” — I continue to be surprised that this Guitar Hero III track hasn’t arrived on Rock Band yet. Seems like every part would be fun…though I suppose there’s that long intro with no vocals.

I’ll pop a playlist of these tracks after the break in case you’re not familiar with them, but I also want to hear your choices. (To easily see which songs were featured on those early games, just head to The Vault and click on the Released column — it’ll sort by ascending release date.) So, your picks: let’s hear them.

Knights of Cydonia, number one. Also Thunder Kiss 65, Free Bird, Higher Ground, Beast and the Harlot….too many to name. I miss a lot from the first games, and I don’t do GH anymore either. Bring it all to RB.

Knights of Cydonia hands down number one though. Hell, any more Muse at all, PLEASE!!!!!

Knights of Cydonia would be great, I think that whole album would be pretty fun.

Crossroads, Sunshine of Your Love would top my list. I think Cream would be such an amazing band to play as a full band. I wonder if there aren’t masters available or if there are band members who don’t want songs in the games.

Chris, “Beast and the Harlot” and “Free Bird” are both in Smash Hits if you can bring yourself to play it. (It’s actually more fun than you’d think from the track list alone.)

    Joe,

Yeaaaahhh, I know they’re on Smash Hits, I just really, really don’t enjoy the GH engine anymore….the graphics are ugly, the drums are goofy tracked (if you’re using an RB kit) and the vocals are dreadful. Metallica is the only GH I play, for obvious reasons, but even then I prefer the four tracks in RB to any on GH. Still, when I heard about Smash Hits, I would have been game if, IF Cydonia had been in there. It wasn’t. Deal breaker.

This one I would TOTALLY love to play with in either a) a future GH game, b) a future RB game, or c) all of the above! This was in GH2 and it really didn’t make much of a splash like Barracuda did when they put it in GH3, so I’d love to see that one get a 2nd chance, and the engine doesn’t matter at all for me, heck they could even put it in a new game based on the Beatles RB engine and I’d eat it up!

Pantera’s “Cowboys From Hell” for sure! And the Trivium DLC from GH2. Its so lame that I bought DLC for GH2 and it cant be transferred into the newer versions. Ugh, this just brings up bad vibes towards Activision for their lack of Importing ALL the songs from previous games.
