Wow. Apparently I have more pull than I realized. When I wrote up the announcement for the new Green Day tracks that are hitting Rock Band next week, I said the following:
Dammit, if we don’t start getting some tracks from American Idiot I’m going to have to smack someone. Also acceptable: anything from Kerplunk! or most of Dookie.
Come on, people! I know the band wants to keep pushing the most recent stuff, but they’ve got a couple decades worth of stuff that’s as good (and often better). Make it happen. I have spoken.
In accordance with my wishes, my hitherto-unknown army of minions swiftly did just that. At the Spike TV VGAs on Saturday, Green Day made an appearance via satellite to announce Green Day: Rock Band.
It’ll be a standalone game arriving sometime next year for PS3, 360, and Wii, and will feature songs from “throughout their long, incredible career.” No word yet on track-list specifics, but the trailer features “American Idiot,” which to my mind bodes well for the inclusion of the whole album of the same name.
The press release is also careful to mention (several times, in fact) that the entire track list will be exportable to Rock Band and Rock Band 2, though of course you’ll miss out on the band avatars and the “select venues and art specific to the band’s history.” (Here’s hoping Berkeley’s legendary Gilman makes it in; it’d be a travesty if it didn’t.)
I gotta say Green Day was not the artist I expected to see following up The Beatles for an exclusive Rock Band project — but I also have to say, as someone who’s listened to the band off and on for something like 18 years now, I’m most definitely looking forward to it.
Now, pay attention, minions: If the track list does not include “Jesus of Suburbia,” “80,” and “One for the Razorbacks,” someone is getting shivved. Also: send money. I have spoken.
Check out the debut trailer after the break.

I….. errr….. hang on – still trying to get my head around this one…
Ok – Green Day: RockBand? Really, well I suppose if I get to play the stuff off Dookie I’ll be happy. But a new release and not DLC? I’m kinda stumped by that one!
Nevertheless – I shall buy, and be happy, and rejoice at yet more music in my collection. I’m not a huge fan of the band (although Dookie is always going to be one of my fav. albums), but they’ll be fun enough. Here’s a question that’s not been asked yet….
Green Day are a trio, and the video footage of American Idiot does show Billy Joe playing and singing at the same time…. furthermore, we already know that the songs are going to be exportable, so my random question is this – if you export it into rockband, will it stay as VoxTar, and does this mean a new animation tree for VoxTars and opening the doors for voxtar characters in the future?
I consider Green Day my favorite band of all time, but even I have to admit to being a little surprised at this move. But of course I’ll buy it and love it.
Green Day, for all intents and purposes, is done acting like a power trio. They have added a 4th member, lead guitarist Jason White, who they used to try to hide, but not so much anymore. This became necessary when Green Day became more than simple power chords that Billie Joe could play and sing at the same time. I wonder how the game will cover the addition of the 4th member in later songs where there’s obviously more than one guitarist.
(Off topic but….) I just noticed all the piccies had alt-text on them… never spotted that before – just went back through a load and I’ve been sat here giggling away to myself!
If this is a full blown big time release, like Beatles: Rock Band, I’m worried about Harmonix completely over saturating the music game market. If this is the AC/DC pack with avatars and some venues, then that’s better, but still a waste of time in my opinion. Yeah, the game is exportable, but I don’t want 40 Green Day songs weighing down my track lists and becoming unavoidable anytime anyone wants to play a random set.
I’m really not a greenday fan… So yah… I found most tracks from American idiot unbearable… I guess the old stuff is ok… Never heard their newest… Il prolly pick up ever other gh game before this…what I really want is another uber challenging mostly metal based game… Hell overchart it like gh3 I don’t care…
I’ll have to agree with Mike on this one. While there are plenty of Green Day songs I really love, I refuse to buy and export any more albums (or whole album DLC) until they allow us to pick out individual tracks, or (better yet) allow us to hide the songs we don’t like.
I already have 200+ songs to sort through, 20% of which are clutter. If they’re really hoping to make this system the “itunes of music games” they’re really going to have to let us hide/delete individual tracks from exports or full album releases. It’s absurd.
DJ Pooka, you win…something. I haven’t figured out what yet. But I promised myself I’d never mention the alt-text myself, and that I’d send a prize to the first person who mentioned it.
Unfortunately I’m totally swamped with other work at the moment, but don’t let me forget I owe you something nifty.
Caveat: It could be some random bit of game swag I have sitting in my closet. So don’t get too excited.
I’ve been a Green Day fan forever. My concern is the censoring that alot of their songs will have to endure. For example, in American Idiot, they say faggot and mindfuck. Do we really think that these will slip by? I’ll still buy the game when it comes out, I just hope that they thought about this.
As someone who has an extensive GD collection… To the makers of the game, PLEASE PLEASE have an unedited version or a code that can remove the edits on the songs. This is of utmost importance to the songs’ integrity. I realize a lot of kids are going to be buying this, so by all means if you must, edit the songs to bring down the age rating but yes, for us older kids and swear-a-holics ( there are a TON of us) please leave an “unedited” option somewhere in the “edit game settings” menu. Perhaps this is something that’s already been considered, and possibly already added, if not I hope it’s not too late.
