If you scoffed at Smash Hits, thinking it was nothing more than a track pack for World Tour, you’re in luck. This standalone collection of retooled and refined tracks from Guitar Hero 1, II, III, Aerosmith, and Rocks the ’80s is now priced as though it is a track pack — at least, it is at Amazon and Best Buy. Currently both retailers have the game for about $20.
Even if you’re only picking the game up to import the available songs into Guitar Hero 5, you’re still getting a pretty decent deal here; the selection of exportable songs is limited, but at 21 available songs you’re still getting a bunch of new tracks for about half price.
If that still doesn’t convince you, allow me to quote from my review at the now-defunct Green Pixels:
I know no song list can please everyone, but the bulk of the selection here just felt a bit flat to me…until I started to play through the lineup on various instruments. Once you do, it becomes clear that many of these songs were chosen for the simple reason that they’re a friggin’ blast to play with a full band. Take Ratt’s “Round and Round,” for example. This insipid ’80s hair-metal throwaway strikes exactly the right balance of simplicity and challenge when you add in vocals and drums, making it an ideal song for party play. And one pass through “YYZ” on drums makes it obvious why this was included: The drum section is legendary. It’s also a treat to play the bass section with the addition of open notes — a feature introduced in World Tour.
I’ve posted the full track list after the break for those of you who may not be familiar with the game. You may want to hurry, though: Best Buy’s deal expires on Saturday, which leads me to believe Amazon’s may as well.
