Music Game Fans Loyal to the Genre, Not a Franchise

It really won't.According to Gamasutra, a report from market-research firm DFC Intelligence on the habits of music-game players shows some interesting results: Namely, that fans of music games tend not to be particularly loyal to either the Guitar Hero or Rock Band franchises.

From the article:

In general, broad loyalty to the music game genre seemed to win out over loyalty to specific brands. Nearly a quarter of Guitar Hero World Tour users went on to play Guitar Hero 5 less than a month after the new game was released, but almost as many — 21 percent — also played The Beatles: Rock Band.

I find that interesting given how often I hear fans of one franchise bash the other in message board posts and comment threads. On the other hand, my own experience is pretty much in line with this study: I’ll play whatever has the songs I want to play.

How about you?

i’m all for rock band but that doesn’t mean i would never play some new songs on guitar hero again. it just means i would never buy another guitar hero again…unless i need a new guitar controller.

Agreed. For me it’s hardware rather than songs that coaxed me over to the other side.

Yup same here – of course, being in the UK meant I was limited in hardware choices – it was either the (very bad!) rockband 1 controllers or the GH hardware, at least until TB:RB came out – so I bought GH3 for my first guitar, then a copy of GHWT for the improved guitar and GHM for a secondary guitar. Sooner or later I might pick up GH5 to get a replacement if I kill one (both guitars have been rebuilt once after the switches died!) and I will quite happily pick up the GH games as I find them second hand and/or on sale.

Of course, RockBand releases tend to be day 1 purchases, and I really can’t remember when I last played a GH game (although, it might have been GH3 so I could play Cliffs of Dover…)

mostly true. all i really want is all my favorite songs in one game. because of that, i prefer Rock Band. but still, i picked up GH: Metallica used for $25, GH5 because of the free GH:VH deal, and my girlfriend got me a copy of The Beatles for free.

i try to support RB/Harmonix as much as possible and avoid giving any $$ to GH/Activision. i have 200+ RB DLC but only 1 GH DLC (Jessie’s Girl), plus the GHWT and GHSH imports – both of which I bought the manual codes off people online for $10.

I’m totally locked into Rock Band at this point with all the DLC I’ve bought. My experience has actually been the opposite, in that I pretty much only buy RB stuff but I have friends who’ve gone primarily GH, so when something new comes out in that franchise, I don’t buy it, I just play it with them. So, I guess we’re each really pretty loyal to our respective franchises.

I own all of the “Hero” games, and “Rock Band” games, and I have to say I love them all equally.
