Talk Amongst Yourselves

God I love New Model Army SO MUCH.Hi folks,

Sorry for the lack up updates so far today. I’m in the middle of finishing a big freelance project and won’t be free until this afternoon.

In the meantime, let’s do an open thread. Tell me: What band or song would you most like to see in a music game that hasn’t appeared yet?

For me, it’s just about anything by UK folk-rock outfit New Model Army. I’ve been a huge fan of this band for many years, and they have a vast and fascinating catalog. In 30 years they’ve never failed to create interesting music with brilliant lyrics, and as a bonus, they tend to feature unusually active bass lines, which would give your plastic bassist something to do.

Come to think of it, though, the guitar parts might be a little overly simple. So I’ll hedge my bet by also suggesting any damn thing by any damn J. Robbins band: Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels — don’t care, I’d play them all.

How about you?

Pretty much any song by Cream would be amazing.

  2. Justin says:

I would love to see some RX Bandits in Rock Band, but I don’t realistically see that happening.

As for something that could actually happen, I’m shocked and appalled that there’s no Cake in either GH or RB.

  3. Joe Rybicki says:

@Mike: You have uncovered a shocking omission. But you’re absolutely right, I’d love to see people introduced to the musical skills of Cream outside of Clapton.

@Justin: I was just wondering the same thing about Cake — I’d love to play “Pretty Pink Ribbon.” Lots of fun bass lines all over Cake’s stuff. Maybe someone thinks the guitar parts are too simple, though…or the horns too important.

As for RX Bandits — hells to the yeah, as the kids say. Nick Suttner from 1UP just turned me on to those dudes recently, and their stuff would be fun as hell to play. I only have Mandala, but “It’s Only Another Parsec” would be ridiculously great to play. Would you recommend anything else from them?

  4. Tim says:

Good contempary Canadian bands like, The Tragically Hip, Our Lady Peace, Sam Roberts, Barenaked Ladies, Bedouin Soundclash, Billy Talent.

Also Optimus Rhyme, anything from their School the Indie Rockers album.

  5. Kevin says:

    Opeth…

Still surprised there’s never been any Green Day.

More than that I’d like to see some Tiger Army and maybe some Sum 41 from back in the Dave Baksh days when they had a lead guitarist capable of something other than power chords.

    LED ZEPPELIN!!

Given the high quality of the recent Beatles version of Rock Band, I can see Harmonix approaching the Zep camp with a little credibility behind them now to do the same thing with Zeppelin. And it would be awesome.

Other than that, I want me some Porcupine Tree. Damn near anything off their last four albums would be pure gold in these games.

What do you mean there’s never been any Green Day??? I have been playing 21 Guns, East Jesus Nowhere, and Know Your Enemy on Rock Band since July.

    Now….where is U2????

  9. Francis says:

I’ve been patiently waiting for the day when something from Neil Young and Crazy Horse comes around. I think the best case scenario would be just about any live version of Hey, Hey, My, My.

  10. Joe Rybicki says:

@Metallichris71: I think he meant there was no good Green Day.

    O SNAP!

No, I kid, I kid. I quite like “21 Guns.” I’m just dying to play “Jesus of Suburbia” and won’t stop grumping about it until I do. The entirety of American Idiot would pretty much be a Day One purchase for me. As would Kerplunk.

@Francis: My bet’s on “Rockin’ in the Free World” coming out before any other Neil Young. But I am open to being pleasantly surprised.

@Goose: Who is this Porcupine Tree of whom you speak?

  11. Metallichris71 says:

Aw come on now, 21st Century is greatness. Yes, American Idiot, especially JOS, would be epic. But for me ANY green day is mucho appreciated. I too would love Kerplunk, but keep dreaming on that one.

One day 21st will have respect, like how Quadrophenia was seen as inferior to Tommy for so long.

I’ll second Porcupine Tree. They’re a great British band that has been active for quite a while. They just released their latest album, The Incident, this week. Check out these clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9dnpx1KSJw#t=0m40s

    After that, I’d love some King’s X.

For songs, I’ll second “Jesus of Suburbia”. Also would love Neil Young’s “Powderfinger”, Buffalo Tom’s “Soda Jerk”, Matthew Sweet’s “Holy War”, The Posies’ “Dream All Day”, The Pretenders’ “Mystery Achievement” and especially Jackson Browne’s “Running on Empty” (with the Beatles harmony engine).

Honestly, I could do this all day. :S

  13. Mike says:

I really liked the hook for 21 Guns, when I heard Telephone Line by ELO. I like Green Day, but that song is super derivative.

A somewhat obscure song that I’d really like to see in game one day would be 25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago. It would be a blast on vocals, and the guitar solo that goes through most of the song would melt the faces of even the most hardcore metal fans.

Side Note: Someday when I buy a cellphone that I can just put any song as the ringtone, Telephone Line will be it. It’ll go over most people’s heads, but for the few that get it, totally worth it.

  14. TonicBH says:

I’m still hoping to see Huey Lewis & The News, They Might Be Giants and Weird Al Yankovic in a rhythm game of some kind. Although I realize that TMBG might be a bit more obscure than the guys who made a lot of hits in the 80s or Weird freakin’ Al, but who wouldn’t want to play Doctor Worm?

  15. Pugs says:

How about some Van Halen with Sammy Hagar (and without Teen Wolf on bass).

    Hot Summer Nights anyone??? Classic…
