Activision CEO Hates Fun, Likes TV Games

Hi! I'm Bobby Kotick! I'd like you to never want to work for me!Well now, that‘s something you don’t hear every day. GameSpot reports that, while speaking at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference in San Francisco yesterday, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick gave himself a pat on the back for achieving one of his goals at the company: “to take all the fun out of making video games.”

That’s not what I came here to tell you about, but that just struck me as so bizarre that I had to share. The thing that really caught my eye was Kotick’s musings about a console-less Guitar Hero. From the article:

“I think what the untethered Guitar Hero does is equal the playing field a little more and give you some leverage with first parties when it comes to downloadable content and the business model,” Kotick said.

The executive also told attendees to “expect many of our products to be playable independent of a console.”

The thing I find interesting is that such products already exist. And if you ask me, they’re sort of the worst of all worlds: You get the same bulky controller, but none of the benefits of being able to, you know, play other games, or watch movies, or download new songs, or go online. Plus, who wants to be rooting around behind their TV every time they want to play a different game?

But hey, that’s just me.
