There were rumors, there was unofficial video (thanks again to reader Pawzilla), but now it looks like it’s official: TeamXbox has posted what appears to be a press release revealing that Kurt Cobain will be a playable character in Guitar Hero 5, joining Johnny Cash, Shirley Manson, Carlos Santana, and Matt Bellamy in the virtual space.

Kurt Cobain is accurately portrayed in Guitar Hero 5, performing his songs as a left-handed guitarist. Once his character is unlocked in Career Mode, players will have the option to play him as a right-handed guitarist, performing like all the other characters, who are by default right handed.

Call it overplayed, call it passe, but “Smells Like Teen Spirit” still gets to me. I can actually remember exactly where I was the first time I heard the song, on college radio, probably just days before it exploded: driving my ’89 Taurus down Broadview Road in Parma, Ohio, with my guitarist and his date, all of us sitting in the front seat for some unfathomable reason. The three-person double-take when the song went from that heavy intro to the mellow verse must have looked pretty comical.

Oh, 1991. What an awesome, awkward year you were.
